Missouri History Unit - Speeches

We just completed a home school unit on Missouri History.This was such a great experience for the kids. Each of the moms taught one week of the unit. Amy started off with Missouri state symbols, Diane did the geography and animals of Missouri and I did a timeline of the important events in Missouri's history. The boys really enjoyed it and I'm sure they learned new stuff. The last week of our Missouri Unit was devoted to famous Missourians. Each of the boys got to choose a famous figure and they had to prepare a short speech on their person. We did the speeches this week at the Neighborhood Chapel. It was really neat. 

Caleb Cooper was Harry S. Truman. Both of my boys said that Caleb's costume was the "ultimate!" They loved it. Caleb entered the chapel waving an American flag and shaking hands just like the president would have done.

Here we have wilderness explorer William Clark, partner to Meriweather Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Cole did a great job representing Clark.

Hunter chose to do his speech on American outlaw, Jesse James. Neither Hunter nor Hayden dressed as their character, but both had exceptional facts and research.

Connor was Walt Disney. He wanted to be a realistic as possible with his speech. He spoke in first person and tried to dress just like Walt Disney might have. He made a grand entrance - jumping up on stage and shaking his booty a little!

Hayden Engram told us about the life of George Washington Carver. He recruited Hunter and Connor to hold up a map of Missouri so that he could point out the important locations in the life of Mr. Carver.
